When it comes to Hair Loss and baldness, there is a different view for Men and Women. While some men are bothered by their thinning hair to do something about it, no one thinks twice when a Man walks into a room with a completely bald head. As a matter of fact some Women associate success and sexiness when a man is bald or balding.
When a Woman begins to lose hair, the social stigma is very different. It is considered unattractive and it is immediately assumed that it has to related to stress, or an illness.
Although Hair Loss does regularly occur in Women, society has yet to come to terms with it. Male hair loss might be uncomfortable, but Female hair loss is catastrophic for most Women. There are several differences when it comes to Hair Loss in Men and Women that go way beyond social acceptance. Women lose their hair for a number of different reasons. A number of factors and conditions can lead to Hair Loss in Women.
Just like Men, Women can experience Hair Loss due to hormones. DHT as an example causes the hair follicles to shrink, so that hair becomes thinner and eventually stops growing. Changes in hormone levels in Women can cause this type of female pattern baldness. The changes can occur during menopause, when estrogen levels drop, or when Women take certain types of birth control that increase the levels of androgens.
A major difference between Male Hair Loss and Female Hair Loss is the timing of the Hair Loss. When a Man starts to lose Hair due to male pattern baldness, it can start as early as his 20s. Women who begin to lose their Hair due to Female pattern baldness don’t see signs of Hair Loss until their early 40s or 50s. There are some cases when a Woman might see signs of hair loss earlier, (Alopecia) but those are less common.
Another reason for Hair Loss in Women is a shock to the system. Known as telogen effluvium, this type of hair loss occurs when the body goes through a major change or trauma. Pregnancy, crash diets and high stress levels can all lead to telogen effluvium. The good news is that this type of Hair Loss is usually temporary. Once the stress or shock has passed, the hair begins to grow again. In some cases, the cause of Hair Loss can be an external force acting on the body. Medical conditions, such as an over or under-active thyroid can lead to sudden Hair Loss, so can low iron levels, common in Women. Pulling the hair back into a tight hair style consistently can lead to Hair Loss, as well.
This brings up another reason for Female Hair Loss most common in African American females, “Traction Alopecia.” Traction Alopecia can occur when hair styles such as braids and weaves cause unnatural pulling in areas such as the hairline around the fore-head, center part, or even around the ears.
Sometimes prescription drugs, the NEO LTS Light, or PRP injections can reverse this type of Hair Loss. Unfortunately more often than not this type of Hair Loss cannot be reversed and has to be remedied with Hair Transplantation.
The NeoGraft FUE Hair Transplant System is ideal for Women and Men of all ethnicities. It allows for multiple Transplantations when budget is a concern or when more than one area is affected. Because with Traction Alopecia there is usually a good amount of healthy hair present in other places of the scalp, this healthy donor hair can be utilized for the Hair Transplant into the areas of complete Hair Loss.
